Odds On Which Democratic Candidate Will Drop Out Next – Recap

When the early state primaries and caucuses were ongoing, sportsbooks put up a fun political prop on the next Democratic candidate to drop out.

Amusingly, they never did the same for the Republican candidates, mainly because Trump had three totally non-credible challengers, two of whom were gone in a flash, with Bill Weld’s chances to bail being a mathematical certainty compared to The Donald’s.

But the DNC candidates got plenty of action, and it can be valuable to look at the following historical odds (via Bovada) and compare them to how it – and these candidates – all went down.

  • Tom Steyer +250 (Feb. 29)
  • Tulsi Gabbard +145 (March 19)
  • Elizabeth Warren +900 (March 5)
  • Joe Biden +2000 (presumptive nominee)
  • Amy Klobuchar +300 (March 2)
  • Pete Buttigieg +2000 (March 1)
  • Michael Bloomberg +2000 (March 4)
  • Bernie Sanders +10000 (April 8)

Interestingly, the favorite at the time the last batch of odds were available was Tom Steyer, and that bet ended up hitting! For most of the cycle, Gabbard was atop these odds, though she hung around longer than anyone except Bernie Sanders, who was – through the first few states – considered the obvious nominee.

Biden, who was always in the middle of the pack, ended up being the last man standing, though it is still possible he will drop out of the race given his apparent health issues. That’s why you see names like Andrew Cuomo and Hillary Clinton still trailing him on the Democratic candidate boards.
